Walter H. Durfee Tall Case Clock ca. 1880’s
This is a magnificent 1880’s Walter H. Durfee Tall Case Clock featuring an English-made Elliott movement.
This is a very early Durfee, as seen by the use of Roman numerals and the fact that the dial does not contain a spot for a jeweler’s name to be engraved.
The movement is a 3-weight Elliott 9-tube Tubular Bell that plays either Westminster or Whittington chimes on 8 tubular bells, while a larger 9th bell is used for the hour strike.
The cabinet contains an incredible amount of detail, from the barley twist columns with beautiful brass capitals to the intricate engraving. Each lock is brass in the form of a lion’s head, and all glass is beveled. This clock also features an extremely rare mercury-filled pendulum.
The movement has been fully overhauled and is in perfect running order.
